Adding ListItems, SubItems and ColumnHeaders

Basic functionality of the ListView can be achieved through the object model exposed through the eVB control by simply adding the control as either a reference or a component to a project.
Before you can do much of anything with the ListView control, you have to put data into it. In the Report view, the ListView acts somewhat like a ListBox and somewhat like a grid-type control. It has rows, which are called ListItems or Items. The ListItem is, for all intents and purposes, the base unit of the control. Most manipulation is based on the ListItem and the ListView control maintains a collection of Items.
To add Items to the control, we simply use the Append method of the ListItems collection like this:

When in Report view, the ListView also has columns. The first column always displays the Text property of the ListItem. Each additional column is called a SubItem and each ListItem maintains its own collection of Subitems. The Subitems collection isn't a typical collection, though. It has no Add, Delete or Count methods and it is 1-based, meaning the first SubItem has an index of 1.
To add a SubItem to a ListItem's SubItems collection, you simply set the SubItem Text like this:

The ListItem's Append method returns a reference to the appended ListItem, making further manipulation of the ListItem (and it's Subitems collection) simpler. LVTutorial uses a ListView with two SubItems, and it uses a single method call to add both the ListItem and SubItem at the same time as shown in Listing 1. Like most collections, the Key and Index properties of the ListItems are optional and by not providing them, default values will be provided when they are added.

This way, adding a ListItem and its SubItems can be achieved with a single call to COMAddListItem.
It is not very intuitive, but it is crucial to know that each SubItem must also have a column "allocated" in the ListView so it can be displayed. Just adding SubItems to the ListItem will not make them visible. To make the SubItems visible, you must add to the ListView's ColumnHeaders collection.
To make things slightly more confusing, ListItems can be shown without any ColumnHeaders, but viewing any SubItems requires adding at least two ColumnHeaders - one for the ListItem and one for the SubItem. ColumnHeaders are added like this:

The first ColumnHeader is the header above the ListItem text and each subsequent ColumnHeader corresponds to a SubItem.
LVTutorial has a single method, shown in Listing 2, that adds all of the necessary ColumnHeaders and then adds four ListItems and their SubItems called COMPopulate.

Removing List Items from the ListView

Once we've added ListItems to the ListView, the next logical step to look at is removing them. Not surprisingly, removing a ListItem is a simple task, achieved by calling the Remove method of the ListItems collection.
Again, since we'll also be removing items with API calls, timing the removal will help quantitatively compare the two methods. Listing 4 shows the Click event handler for cmdCOMDelete.

There is a lot more functionality exposed by the ListView COM object's methods and properties, but they are, for the most part, pretty intuitive and easy to get a handle on. Use the Object Browser (press F2 in the eVB IDE) to explore the rest of the object model and play around to familiarize yourself with the control's capabilities.

Basic BenchMarking
Since we're going to be looking at both COM and API methods of doing similar tasks, it will be useful to be able to do some quantitative comparisons of the methods. The simplest way to achieve this is to time execution of methods that perform identical tasks.
For timing, LVTutorial uses the GetTickCount API which simply returns the number of milliseconds since the device was last started. The number is a Long and therefore the chance of wrapping back to zero occurs about 50 days after startup. This precision and reliability make it a great tool for execution timing.
To time the execution of a method, you simply store the return value of GetTickCount before execution and then subtract that value from the return value of GetTickCount after execution.
The execution time of COMPopulate is calculated in the Click event handler for cmdCOM.
On my iPaq 3650 I get times of around 60 milliseconds.

Access scalar query allows you to do in one SQL statement what you are used to doing in two or more queries. This function allows retrieval of single values from a table, usually aggregate functions, from within the from clause.Get individual values while at the same time getting max, min, avg, etc values from the same source without having to use the Group By clause... this greatly simplifies query design. Here's the setup for our scalar query example:
Our goal is the retrieve SSN, Pay_Rate, Max Pay_Rate, Min Pay_Rate, and calculate each employees' percent of maximum pay rate.

Don't bother trying to create this in the design grid. You must get into SQL view. The key point of the query is:
[select max(pay_rate) as Max_R from m_emp_pay]. as Q_Max There are two aliases in this subquery - Max_R for the field and Q_Max for the source name. See how these aliases are immediately used in the Select clause of the query. No group by required!! Therefore you get the individual pay rates for employees while, at the same time, retrieving min, max, and most importantly the percent of max.

The main restriction with scalar SQL statement is that the function can only return a single value, although you can have multiple subquerys in one main query.

Have you ever had to create several reports that were almost identical but had different order for the columns and a different sort order? Many of these reports can be done in one intelligent report and query combination with the Access SQL Command: Choose function. Access Choose function query example setup: We have a form called Form1. On Form1 are two combo boxes (Field1_Combo, Field2_Combo), and a 'Preview Report' button:
Both combo boxes have the same Row Source. Note that there are two columns in the row source; the first is a number (1, 2) and the second is the name of the field to be included in the report and sorted by.

Don't be confused by the Replace command... all that does is get rid of underscore character in the field name (Employee_No to Employee No).
Using the Access Choose function query can be extended to numerous fields and could probably be used for aggregate functions too, but I haven't tried that yet. The alternative to using the SQL Choose command is to write many lines of VBA code in the report or behind the parameter form (Form1). You can also use the choose function to pass parameters to an Access Query.

AFIELDS() is an array function that fills a series of arrays (structure attribute arrays) with the structure of the database file currently open, one element in each array per field. AFIELDS() works like ADIR(), filling a series of existing arrays with information. To use AFIELDS(), you must first create the arrays to hold the database structure information, each with the same number of elements as the number of fields (i.e. FCOUNT()). Once the structure attribute arrays are created, you can then invoke AFIELDS() to fill the structure arrays with information about each field.
By default, AFIELDS() operates on the currently selected work area. It can operate on an unselected work area if you specify it within an aliased expression (see example below).
AFIELDS() is a compatibility function and therefore is not recommended. It is superseded by DBSTRUCT(), which does not require the existence of any arrays prior to invocation and returns a multidimensional array containing the current database file structure.
